Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Rain falls in drops, in strings and sheets,
Sparse then full,
Light then heavy,
Spreading over the earth,
Pouring blessing on all things.
Seen or unseen,
All reach out their arms, lift up their faces,
Open-hearted, drinking deep.
Who taught them to thirst for such sweet rain?
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
The high vault splits; all things appear again.
Mist on the ridges—creation breathing.
Earth stirs; puddles blink to one another.
Rapids ring on rock; ripples run across the pond.
Water beads and slides from twig and tip,
Roots drink deep in the wet dark soil.
Leaves nod; cicadas rustle under shade.
All living beings under heaven
Drink from a single source.
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Drip-drop, drip-drop—
The step of seconds,
The seeker’s circling,
The drift between the sky and soil.
It is the heartbeat,
It is the pulse,
The slow-falling tear,
The trembling word on the lips,
Joy at being washed,
Song at being moved.
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Drip-drop, drip-drop—
All things are water,
And water is all things.
Threads of water, like a line, sew what is broken;
The world returns, the infinite is seen.
Rain sounds like strings; sky and earth sing high.
Music wells and flows,
Filling the deep places of the soul.
In dimness and unknowing,
With earth we share this baptism.
Drip-drop, drip-drop,
Drip-drop, drip-drop—
May drip-drop between heaven and waters
Never cease.
